Technivorm Moccamaster Review [KBT 741]: Is the Technivorm Worth the Money?
Hand-built in the Netherlands, SCA certified, repairable for decades — and it does exactly one thing.
Buy it if
- You drink filter coffee daily and want it right every time
- You want an appliance you can still repair in 2040
- Brew temperature and contact time matter to you
Skip it if
- You want programmability or a timer
- You brew one cup at a time
- You want a machine that also does espresso or milk
The Moccamaster has been made in the same Dutch factory since 1968 and has almost no features. It heats water to the right temperature, delivers it over the right time, and can be rebuilt indefinitely. Whether $369 is reasonable depends entirely on how long you plan to keep it.
Glass or thermal?
Technivorm sells the same brewing unit with two different carafes, and the choice changes what happens to the coffee after it is made rather than how it is brewed.
Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select 10-Cup Coffee Maker
Glass carafe on a hot plate. Cheaper, and the coffee stays hot — at a cost.Check price
Technivorm Moccamaster KBT Thermal Carafe
A vacuum carafe holds temperature without cooking the coffee. A hot plate keeps the pot hot by continuing to heat it, which turns a good brew bitter within forty minutes.Check price
Where the 8.7 comes from
Five criteria. It is close to perfect at its one job and offers nothing beyond it.
Specifications
What it does well, and what it does not
The reason this machine costs what it does is that it holds 92 to 96 °C throughout the brew and delivers the water over the right period, which is precisely what a cheap drip machine fails to do. Most sub-$100 brewers run cold and pass water through too quickly, which is why their coffee tastes thin and sour regardless of the beans you put in. The Moccamaster removes that variable permanently.
It removes nothing else. There is no timer, no clock and no programming — the switch is a switch. For an appliance at this price that is a genuine limitation and the single most common complaint from owners who expected otherwise. What you get instead is a machine that will still be brewing in 2045, with parts available, which is a different kind of value and one you only collect if you keep it.

- Glass carafe on a hot plate — the thermal version costs more
- Loud pump for the first minute
- $369 for a machine that only makes filter coffee

How we scored it
This review is editorially researched. We worked from Technivorm’s published specifications, the SCA certification listing, the owner record across four models on Amazon, and price and availability confirmed on 12 August 2026. One model we previously linked to is no longer sold and has been replaced. We have not measured brew temperature ourselves and do not claim to have.

What does SCA certification actually mean?
One job, done properly, for twenty years
The Moccamaster brews filter coffee to specification and does absolutely nothing else, which is either the point or the problem depending on what you wanted. Buy the thermal version unless you finish a pot in one sitting, and buy it at all only if you intend to still own it in a decade — that is where the $369 pays for itself.
