What is the Best Nespresso Machine? Pod Machine Buyers Guide
Choosing a Nespresso machine is really one decision, and it is not which model. It is Original or Vertuo. Original capsules are made by dozens of roasters and there are refillable stainless ones; Vertuo capsules carry a barcode the machine reads, so Nespresso is the only company that can sell you one, forever. Every other difference on this page is a tank size and a colour. Six of the nine machines this page used to recommend are no longer buyable, so this list was rebuilt against the live Amazon catalogue on 12 August 2026, and it is weighted toward the line that leaves you a way out.

The largest Original-line tank here at 34 oz, a 19-bar pump and the Aeroccino frother in the box, on the capsule line that still has competition behind it.
Best Nespresso machines overview
Seven machines confirmed buyable on 12 August 2026: four Original line, two Vertuo, and one hand-pumped travel unit that takes Original capsules without any electricity at all.

The 7 best Nespresso machines reviewed
Nespresso CitiZ: the Original machine that comes with the milk answer attached
Best overall · 9.4

This is the complete Original-line machine. Thirty-four ounces of water means you are not refilling it daily, the pump and thermoblock are the same ones in every machine in the line so the shot quality is identical, and the Aeroccino jug that ships with it makes thick hot foam with no technique at all. What separates it from Vertuo is not the coffee, it is the next five years: third-party capsules work, refillable stainless capsules work, and Nespresso is a supplier rather than the only supplier. It is the most expensive machine here and it is the one we would own.
What we like
- 34 oz tank, the largest on the Original line here
- Aeroccino milk frother included
- Takes third-party and refillable capsules
- Compact square footprint despite the tank
- 19-bar pump, espresso with crema
What to know
- The most expensive machine on this page
- Espresso and lungo only, no mug-sized brew
- The Aeroccino is a second thing to wash every day
Nespresso Essenza Mini: the same shot as the expensive ones, in a fraction of the counter
Best value · 9.3

Everything that produces the coffee is the same as the CitiZ: same 19-bar pump, same thermoblock, same capsules, same crema. What you give up is a 20 oz tank you will fill every few days and the two-button simplicity of a machine with no programmable anything. It is about the width of a paperback and heats in roughly half a minute. For a first Nespresso, or a second one for an office, there is no reason to spend more unless you specifically want the tank or the frother.
What we like
- Same pump and brewing as machines twice the price
- The smallest footprint of any Original machine
- Heats in around 30 seconds
- Takes third-party and refillable capsules
- Deep owner record for a compact machine
What to know
- 20 oz tank, refilled every few days
- No milk frother in this configuration
- Two fixed cup sizes and nothing else
Nespresso Vertuo Plus Deluxe: one slot, five cup sizes, one supplier
Best for mug-sized coffee · 9.1

If you drink coffee by the mug rather than by the shot, this is the machine that does it properly. The capsule tells the machine how much water and how fast to spin, so an 18 oz alto and a 1.35 oz espresso come out of the same slot with no settings to change. The 60 oz tank is the biggest here and it swivels, which matters on a shallow counter. The catch is written on every capsule rim: a barcode, and no third-party or refillable option, ever. Buy it knowing that every future capsule comes from one company at one price.
What we like
- Cup sizes from 1.35 oz to 18 oz with no settings
- 60 oz swivelling tank, the largest here
- Aeroccino milk frother included
- Crema on a mug-sized coffee, which pressure machines cannot do
- Very deep owner record
What to know
- No third-party capsules and no refillables, ever
- Capsules cost more than Original and always will
- Large machine, and it spins loudly
- Used capsules are bulkier to store and recycle
Nespresso Pixie: metal sides, 25 seconds, and nothing else to talk about
Best built · 8.9

The Pixie is what happens when the design brief is durability rather than features. The side panels are metal, the machine is dense for its size, and it comes up to temperature in roughly 25 seconds, which is the fastest here. There is no frother, no programming and no large tank: 24 oz, two buttons, done. It costs more than the Essenza Mini and makes exactly the same coffee, so buy it only if you want the machine that will still look and feel right in five years.
What we like
- Aluminium side panels, the best build in the line
- Ready in around 25 seconds from cold
- Small footprint for a metal-bodied machine
- Takes third-party and refillable capsules
What to know
- Costs more than the Essenza Mini for identical coffee
- 24 oz tank
- The pump is noticeably loud
Nespresso Inissia: the cheapest full-size Original machine, and it shows in the plastic
Best budget Original · 8.7

The Inissia is the CitiZ with the money taken out of the casing. Same pump, same capsules, same shot, and a body light enough that it slides across the counter when you press the button. The tank is 24 oz, the cup support folds up for a travel mug, and the two buttons are programmable for volume, which the Essenza Mini's are not. It is the sensible pick if you want an Original machine, do not care what it looks like, and would rather spend the difference on coffee.
What we like
- The cheapest full-size Original machine here
- Programmable cup volumes
- Folding cup support for tall mugs
- Takes third-party and refillable capsules
What to know
- Light enough to slide on the counter
- All-plastic construction
- 24 oz tank with a fiddly lid
Nespresso Vertuo Pop+: the Vertuo system at a third of the Vertuo price
Cheapest Vertuo · 8.5

Nespresso built this to get people onto the Vertuo capsule system cheaply, and on that basis it works: under ninety dollars, four cup sizes up to 12 oz, and coffee identical to what the machines above it produce, because the capsule does the work. The tank is 19 oz and the machine is small and plasticky. Everything that is true about Vertuo capsules is true here too, only you have paid less to enter the arrangement, which is the honest way to describe it.
What we like
- Under ninety dollars for the full Vertuo system
- Four cup sizes up to 12 oz
- Smallest Vertuo footprint
- Heats quickly for a Vertuo
What to know
- No third-party capsules and no refillables
- 19 oz tank, filled constantly
- No 18 oz alto size
- Light plastic body
WACACO Minipresso NS: Original capsules with no plug, no battery and no excuses
Best for travel · 8.3

You pour hot water into the 80 ml chamber, drop in an Original capsule and pump the piston with your thumb. There is no motor, no power and nothing to go wrong on a mountain. The pressure comes from your hand, so it is inconsistent by nature and still enough for a genuine short shot with crema. It weighs a little over a pound, cleans under a tap, and it is the only device on this page that works in a tent. It is not a replacement for a machine on a counter and it was never meant to be.
What we like
- No power source of any kind
- Takes standard Original capsules
- Around a pound, packs into a glovebox
- Rinses clean under a tap
What to know
- Pressure depends on your thumb, so shots vary
- 80 ml chamber, one small shot at a time
- You still need hot water from somewhere

Nespresso CitiZ. A 34 oz tank, 19 bars and the Aeroccino frother in the box, on the line that takes third-party capsules.
You want the cheapest honest way in
Nespresso Essenza Mini. The smallest Original machine, the same 19-bar pump, and a footprint the width of a paperback.
You drink mug-sized coffee, not espresso
Nespresso Vertuo Plus Deluxe. Vertuo capsules scale from an espresso to 18 oz, and this one has the 60 oz tank and a frother.
You want the best-built machine on the page
Nespresso Pixie. Metal side panels, ready in around 25 seconds, and it stays exactly the same size on the counter.
You want an Original machine for under two hundred
Nespresso Inissia. The same pump and capsule system as the CitiZ in lighter plastic, for a good deal less money.
You want Vertuo but not the Vertuo price
Nespresso Vertuo Pop+. Under ninety dollars for the same centrifusion brewing, with a smaller tank and fewer cup sizes.
You want capsules on a plane, a boat or a campsite
WACACO Minipresso NS. A hand pump, an 80 ml water chamber and Original capsules, with no power source at all.
What is the best-rated Nespresso machine of 2026?
The Nespresso Vertuo Plus Deluxe and the Nespresso Essenza Mini carry the deepest owner records here, which tells you what most people buy rather than what is best. The Nespresso CitiZ has a much thinner record and is the better machine, because it sits on the capsule line where you still have suppliers to choose between. Owner counts in this category measure marketing reach, not brewing.
Nespresso machines, by the company that built them
Nespresso designs the machines and licenses the manufacturing. The name on the box changes what the warranty says and almost nothing else.
How to choose a Nespresso machine
Original or Vertuo is the only decision that matters
Vertuo capsules have a barcode printed on the rim. The machine scans it, then spins the capsule at high speed to brew, which is why it can produce anything from an espresso to an 18 oz mug from the same slot. It also means Nespresso is the only company on earth that can legally and technically sell you a capsule for it. Original machines use pressure, take espresso and lungo, and have a competitive capsule market behind them. Convenience against not being locked in, and everything else on this page follows from which way you answer.
Work out the cost per capsule before the cost of the machine
Nespresso’s own Original capsules sit around eighty cents to a dollar ten; third-party roasters undercut that meaningfully and refillable stainless capsules drop it to the price of whole beans. Vertuo capsules have no competition, so the price is whatever Nespresso decides it is. Two capsules a day is somewhere near six hundred dollars a year on Vertuo. The Nespresso Pixie costs less than half of one year of that difference.
Nineteen bars is a marketing number
Espresso extracts at about nine bars at the puck. Every Original machine here advertises nineteen, which is the pump’s maximum against a closed valve and not what the coffee ever sees. It is not a lie and it is not a specification you should compare between machines, because they all use the same pump. What actually differs between them is tank size, heat-up time and build.
Heat-up time is the specification you will notice daily
These are thermoblock machines, so they heat water on demand rather than keeping a boiler hot. The Nespresso Pixie is ready in around 25 seconds and the rest are in the same territory. That is genuinely faster than any home espresso machine with a boiler, and it is the strongest practical argument for capsules over the alternative in our espresso machine guide.
Refillable capsules turn an Original machine into a real espresso machine
A stainless refillable capsule costs around twenty dollars once and takes your own coffee. You dose it, tamp it lightly and the machine brews it at pressure. It is fussier than dropping in a capsule and the result depends entirely on your grinder, which means it needs a proper espresso grinder to work. Done properly it is the cheapest good espresso in any kitchen. It does not work on Vertuo, at all.
Milk frothers are a separate machine in a bundle
The Aeroccino that ships with the Nespresso CitiZ and the Vertuo bundles is a standalone jug: it heats and whips milk, it is not a steam wand and it does not make latte art texture. It makes good, thick, hot foam with no skill required, which for cappuccino at home is most of what people want. If you already own a handheld frother, buy the machine without the bundle and save the difference.
How we test and judge Nespresso machines
This guide is editorially researched. We recorded capsule line, tank size, refillable support and third-party capsule availability from manufacturer specifications and verified listings, marked as not disclosed anything Nespresso does not publish, weighted supplier lock-in and running cost above convenience features, weighed each machine against independent owner evidence, and confirmed current availability through the Amazon catalogue on 12 August 2026. We have not brewed on every machine here and we do not claim we have.

Buy the CitiZ, and stay on the Original line
The Nespresso CitiZ is the best machine here on the only measure that survives five years of ownership: it brews at real pressure, it takes capsules from anyone including a refillable you fill yourself, and the Aeroccino in the box covers milk drinks without a second appliance. If the price is too much, the Nespresso Essenza Mini and the Nespresso Inissia brew identically for less. Choose Vertuo only if you have decided that mug-sized coffee from one supplier forever is a trade you are happy with, and if you have, the Nespresso Vertuo Plus Deluxe is the one to buy.
